Inaugural German Open Bronze Event set for Hamburg

The PSA World Tour heads to Hamburg later this season for the inaugural German Open, a men’s and women’s Bronze event taking place from the 3-7 April 2024 at The Sportwerk Centre in Hamburg, the biggest PSA event ever to be held in Germany and the first PSA World Tour event to be held in the country.

The Sportwerk Center has 15 squash courts, including a four wall glass court. The center court can seat up to 300 spectators and is Germany’s biggest Squash Center. The venue has hosted the German Junior Open, German Nationals, the German Junior Nationals, the German Masters, the Bundesliga Play offs and several PSA Challenger Tour tournaments.

“I’ve been in Hamburg for 12 years now and running the Sportwerk squash centre for 10 years,” said event promoter Bart Wijnhoven.

“It’s a great place where squash is booming and where pros drop by for some glass-court practice. Even though I am Dutch, it has always bothered me that Germany didn’t have a World Tour event. Personally, it’s a bit sad that I didn’t manage to start this event in the Simon Rösner era. However, I am very proud to have the German Open on the PSA calendar!

“I’m super excited to start this collaboration with the PSA. The goal is to have it as a reoccurring event on the tour and not a one-time-thing!”

The event will attract 48 of the best male and female players from across the globe, all looking to claim the Bronze event titles and earn valuable World ranking points. World No.35 Raphael Kandra is the highest ranked German in the men’s rankings, whilst World No.72 Saskia Beinhard leads the way for the women. They’ll both be looking for strong performances in front of a home crowd for the first time.

“We are extremely pleased to have a PSA World Tour event happening in Germany this season.” said PSA CCO Tommy Berden.

“Germany has always been a country with a great squash community and is deserving of a big tournament for the many squash enthusiasts that are there. Sportwerk looks to be the perfect venue to host the Bronze event and we can’t wait for it to begin.”

Tickets for the event are on sale now and can be bought here.   Alternatively, the event will be streamed live on SQUASHTV.
